Music Genres

Rock music, originally known as "rock and roll" originated in the US, during the 1950's period. Rock music is influenced highly by genres such sables, jazz and country. Rock music is usually associated with the idea of having electric guitars, distorted screams throughout the music and the artists wearing dark heavy make up.

ROCK

HIP HOP

Hip Hop was seen as an art during the 1970's, when it was preformed by African American youth in the US. The art is believed to have originated in the South Bronx, in New York city. I contains many styles including rap which also erupted the birth of DJing and MCing.

POP (POPULAR)

Pop music is simply popular music of a period of time, all put it one genre. This idea came about during the 1950s/60s, and is said to have originated in the Western part of the world. Pop music is usually seen as the singles chart, as to whats 'hot right now', so it can really be any genre, as long as it's in.

INDIE ROCK

Indie rock is seen as another version of rock music, which originated in the US and UK, during the 80s. Its very connected to the idea of indie pop too and actually contributed to the birth of 'Britpop'. Yet, indie rock rhythm does not correlate entirely with min stream rock. Indie (independent) artist usually don't tend to be part of record labels, and have a small fandom/ target audience.

R&B

R&B is the abbreviation for the term rhythm and blues. This genre is mostly popular among the African American community, mainly in the US which originated during the 1940s. The blues originating at that time during African American history is significant, as it was when the suffered oppression when America was hugely racist. African Americans would tend to sing these songs during times of happiness, however artists of today are doing the opposite by using R&B to express relationship issues and is now sung by people of all races.

GRIME

Grime is a genre of music that has been influenced by genres such as UK garage and also jungle. It began to grow in the early 200's which featured uprising starts at the time such as Skepta and Dizzee Rascal. Most grime music videos are shot in estate areas, as many artists like to give off the impression of rising to the top, from the 'ghetto' (rough areas).

AFROBEAT

Afrobeat is a music genre that originated from traditional West African culture(Mainly Nigerian & Ghana), and spread all across Africa. The West African culture then combined with other genres such as jazz and American funk, to of course create afrobeat. Many famous artists now seem to add sense of 'afrobeat', to liven their music.
